PHONETICS III

Let's go with some more pair discrimination. Today you're going to study the differences between /ɔː/ and /əʊ/ in Unit 3 at the BBC site. Watch the videos on the two sounds first of all.

You also have to learn about three more sounds: /e /  /æ/ and /ʌ/. Listen to the videos and do Unit 4

When you finish you can do more practice here
Let's start testing ourselves. Do this short test and tell me how you did.

  4. Unit 3's exercises are very easy, /ɔː/ is like our "o" and /əʊ/ is like spanish "ou".

The exercises from unit 4 are more harder. /e / is the tipical "e", /ʌ/ is like an "a" and /æ/ is a mix of /e/ and /ʌ/.

  5. HI EVERYBODY! I FINISHED MY EXERCISES!! exercise 3 was easier than exercise 4 because it was dificult to differenciate in some cases but it makes me do 89% in the test so I feel happy because I begin to understand why we must do these exercises.

  7. I've done the exercises of the two units and I think that unit 4 is a bit complicated for me because I can't distinguish the sound /ʌ/ with the sound /æ/. My mark in the test is 80%.

  8. Well I've made some of them wrong, but the most of them were well done. This is perfect to see the difference into both sounds.

  9. Hello, i have just done unit 3 and 4.
For me unit 3/ɔː/əʊ/was easier than unit 4 e/æ/ʌ/, because in unit 3 you only have to 2 different sounds and in unit 4 you had 3 different sounds, although exercises were not very difficult.

  11. I've made units 3 and 4. I think that unit 3 is the easiest unit because is not very difficult to identificate the sounds. In unit 4, the difference between /æ/and /e/ is very easy, but I can't see clearly the difference between /æ/ and /ʌ/

I have done both units, but I found the second one was little bit harder the sounds /æ/ and /ʌ/ are hard to recognice but I got 80%. So I´ll keep practicing
